Every person has an image in his or her mind of what God must be like. Psychologists tell us that our mental image of God comes largely as a result of our relationships with our earthly fathers.

Some people view God as an angry tormenter who spends most of His time being mad at them. Others see God as a strict disciplinarian, who is watching and waiting for them to do something wrong, so that He can punish them. For some, God is like an absentee father who is too busy or preoccupied to pay attention to their lives. Still others imagine that God is like a kindly grandfather who indulges them occasionally, but has little in common with them.

Truth is, all of these ideas about God are far from what Scripture reveals to us about His nature, His character, and His intentions. The night before He died on the cross, Jesus said this to God in prayer:

    “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. ” (John 17:3, NKJV)

Notice what these words of Jesus reveal to us about God:

• He is the only true God – which means that all other so-called gods are phonies and pretenders.
• He is the God who sent His Son, Jesus Christ – who came to reveal God perfectly and fully.
• He is knowable.
• He gives eternal life to those who know Him
